What Is A Respite Care Home?
At Dunham Care Homes, we offer our respite care services to anybody who may require temporary care. The respite care services we offer are tailored to each individual, depending on the needs of the person being cared for. It is our primary aim to make the transition from home care to respite care as seamless as possible, while providing continued high-level care.
Our short-term residents receive the same level of care and support as our permanent residents, and are encouraged to get involved in all of the activities, events and social clubs available. This ensures every aspect of your loved one’s health and wellbeing is prioritised, keeping them engaged physically and mentally during their time with us. We also have luxury onsite services for our residents to enjoy and be pampered, such as hair and nail salons.
Alongside this, our experienced and medically trained professionals are on hand to provide nursing care support where necessary, from personal hygiene and grooming through to managing and administering medication.

Planning For Respite Care
It may not always be possible to plan ahead when it comes to arranging respite care, and our team will try their utmost to source you with the appropriate care, even at short notice.
At Dunham Care, we accept respite care bookings in advance, which is perfect when planning periods of future leave. We request that you provide us with a notice of two weeks prior to the booking, to give us ample time to make the necessary arrangements.
Before move-in, our General Manager will arrange a meeting with you to outline a tailored care plan, to make sure we understand your loved one’s unique care needs, so they get the most from their experience with us. This plan details every aspect of care with specifics around the requirements and preferences of your loved one, including their emotional, social and spiritual needs.

What Is A Respite Care Home?
Being a caregiver is a selfless, all-consuming commitment, meaning you don’t often get the opportunity to enjoy much-needed rest or ask for assistance when they need a break. Respite care, however, enables carers to take some time back for themselves, while feeling reassured that their loved one is receiving the best care in their absence. This can be instrumental in preventing burnout, ensuring you’re in the best position to care for your loved one when they need you most.
There are many benefits of respite care for both carers and those who move into a respite care home for temporary care.

Benefits of respite care for carers
- Provides the opportunity to take a much-needed break and prioritise your own health and wellbeing to reduce the risk of burnout
- Get peace of mind that your loved one is in safe hands whilst you take time for yourself
- Provides the opportunity to book a holiday or short break
- It can be utilised during times of external stress, such as moving house or starting a new job
- It can be used if you are unwell or are recovering from medical surgery
- Access a community of support from other caregivers to share the load with

Benefits of respite care for the individual receiving temporary care
- A change of scenery - the provision of care is delivered in an entirely new setting with new people to interact with, which can be refreshing and reinvigorating. It also enables your loved one to have some time away from home, which can sometimes feel isolating
- Specially trained care staff who are readily available
- The opportunity to meet new people and create connections with like-minded people who share the same experiences, hobbies and interests
- The opportunity to experience life in a care home - a short-term stay provides a taster of what support in a care home entails

Emergency Respite Care
There may be unforeseen occasions when the need for care is urgent, and that’s what our emergency respite care service is designed for.
Emergency respite care may be required for a number of reasons, such as the responsibilities of the carer becoming overwhelming and challenging, a family emergency, or the unexpected development of an illness.
You can rest assured that our team at Dunham Care will treat those requiring urgent respite care with the same level of care, respect and dignity as our permanent residents. Our team will do their best to accommodate your loved one at short notice, should you be in need of emergency respite care.

Dementia Respite Care
Caring for those with dementia can be both physically and emotionally challenging due to the high level of care required at all times. The delivery of dementia-specific care can become harder to manage as the illness progresses, alongside the demands of everyday life. Dementia respite care can help relieve some of the pressure, and can also be used as a trial run should you be considering the move to a more permanent care solution.

Frequently Asked Questions
When your loved one chooses to live with us, you can be sure they’ll feel at home with Dunham Care.
What is respite care?
Respite care is a ‘short-term break’ or temporary care solution that enables carers to take a break, whether for much-needed rest, a holiday or during an unsettling time, such as recovery from surgery. This type of care, usually delivered in a care home setting, ensures the person receiving care has access to the support they need around-the-clock, without experiencing disruption to their routine.
How do I choose the right respite care home?
The first steps you should take when choosing a nursing home are to review the Care Quality Commission (CQC) rating, as this will detail how the care home measures up to the best practice standards set. It’s also important to review customer testimonials and visit the premises to get a feel for the staff and atmosphere of the home.
Other steps you can take include:
- Reviewing the staff:resident ratio
- Ask to see the activity plans for residents
- Ask whether residents are provided with a personalised care plan
- Review the cleanliness and maintenance of communal areas
- Spend time with residents to get a feel for their experience and determine how well they are cared for
How long can respite care last?
Respite care is a temporary care solution. Most care homes will outline that a period of respite should last between 2 and 8 weeks, at which time the need for care would be reassessed. This will differ between facilities. At Dunham Care, a period of respite would typically last for 1-4 weeks, but this can be tailored to the needs of the individual.
