Private Bedrooms

Each of our bedrooms is fully furnished to a high standard with an accessible ensuite wetroom, and residents can add personal touches to create a homely atmosphere. Each resident is also provided with a memory box full of pictures and belongings that are meaningful to them. Our dementia care homes are fitted with silent call bell systems for residents’ safety, and tasteful furnishings are used to prevent a clinical-feeling atmosphere.

Fine Dining | Dunham Care Homes

Fine Dining Restaurants

Our chefs cater to the dietary requirements and preferences of our residents, preparing food that is flavourful and nutritionally balanced, offering options for every taste and fancy. Taste and food are linked to memory, so we strive to help stimulate residents with healthy, home-cooked meals. We can also arrange for residents to dine with their loved ones privately, for special occasions or on a regular basis.

Magic Tables | Dunham Care Homes

Magic Tables

‘Magic tables’ or ‘tovertafel’ are provided in each of our care homes; these are designed to help engage individuals living with dementia, especially as the condition progresses. These sensory tables give residents and their loved ones the opportunity to enjoy quality time together, and they encourage cognitive stimulation through the use of sight, sound and touch.

Dementia-Friendly Design

Our dementia care homes are designed and furnished to create a comforting and relaxing atmosphere. Zoning and signposting are subtly implemented to help residents find their way around. Calming colour palettes are employed in natural, earthy tones that have been especially chosen to emulate nature. Handrails, floors and doors are painted in contrasting colours, helping residents to navigate with ease.

Corridors and communal areas are decorated and themed to encourage memory stimulation. Entrances are well-lit, and large windows allow natural light to flood in, preventing any areas of dark shadow, which can potentially cause confusion.

Kitchens and dining rooms are easily recognisable, helping to stimulate the appetite and encourage supported independence among residents. Should any resident need some quiet time or a place to decompress if they feel anxious or overwhelmed, there are several cosy lounges and comforting nooks. Our gardens also feature paved walkways, so residents can enjoy leisurely strolls amid beautiful greenery.

Dementia Care Plans

Every resident has a thorough assessment with one of our specially trained staff before they transition to full-time care. This allows us to create a personalised care plan, outlining every aspect of care and detailing the specific needs, requirements and preferences of your loved one.

It’s also important that every resident living with dementia establishes a routine, which is outlined in the initial stages of their transition to care. Once the resident and their family are happy with every aspect proposed, we’ll prepare to implement the dementia care plan. This process helps our team to ensure continued high quality of life for your loved one.

Our holistic approach to dementia care prioritises the wellbeing of every resident. We provide support in many different ways, encouraging residents to live their lives to the fullest, and empowering them to make decisions and take risks in a controlled and safe environment. Our dementia care plans are underpinned by an understanding and deep appreciation of individuals’ personalities, strengths and aspirations, helping us to ensure every day is full of excitement, fun and enjoyment for everyone involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

When your loved one chooses to live with us, you can be sure they’ll feel at home with Dunham Care.

Dementia care is specialist support provided by a trained professional for those living with dementia. The goal of dementia care is to ensure a high quality of life for the individual with round-the-clock care, while providing opportunities for engagement, cognitive stimulation and new experiences in a safe and supportive environment.

H3 – How might dementia influence care needs?

Dementia can significantly impact an individual’s ability to:

> Communicate with others

> Maintain an adequate standard of personal care, such as grooming and hygiene

> Manage other medical problems that may be present

> Ensure their day-to-day safety

> Make informed decisions

As dementia affects cognitive ability and can be degenerative, it is essential for the individual to have support on hand for any eventuality, including support with everyday tasks.

Key factors that help settle a dementia patient into a care home include:

Establish a routine: to provide structure and familiarity to everyday life which can help them retain their independence, a routine offers a sense of control and reduces the risk of anxiety and stress.

Establish a sense of homeliness and familiarity: ensure your loved one can furnish their personal space with meaningful belongings and items that stimulate their memory and recognition.

A tailored, personal approach and care plan: an understanding and appreciation for the individual’s needs, requirements, aspirations and likes is essential in dementia care. This enables a high quality of care to be delivered that truly engages, comforts and empowers each resident to live life to the fullest.

Regular visits from loved ones: this can help soothe and ease the transition if the individual is feeling overwhelmed with a new environment and different level of care. It also fosters engagement and a sense of connection, and trust.

> Specialist professional support: staff who understand every aspect of dementia and how it can present differently in every individual are present in a dementia care home, ensuring a high level of support and care can be provided at all times.

The first steps to take when choosing a care home are to review the rating that the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has provided, as this will help you understand how the care home complies with the best practice standards set. It’s also important to read customer reviews and visit the premises to get a feel for the staff and atmosphere of the home.

Other steps you can take include:

> Reviewing the staff-to-patient ratio

> Ask to see the dementia-specific activity plans

> Ask whether the facility provides personalised dementia care plans for residents

> Take note if the facility is accessible for those living with dementia – are there accessible gardens, signposting, furnishings and adequate space to decompress?

> Review its cleanliness and the maintenance of communal areas

The decision to transition to a dementia care home is often made when the needs of the individual become too great for the caregiver to manage on their own.

Factors that may contribute are:

> The safety of their loved one

> Increased difficulty with the delivery of daily tasks

> The individual’s needs are becoming too challenging

> The level of care provision is required continuously
